چکیده

Specularities-bright image regions formed by specular reflection-are likely to be mistaken for genuine surface markings by processes that perform photometric analysis, derive motion fields from optical flow or est imate depth from binocular stereo. In addition th ey can be used to infer surface geometry. This paper describes a scheme for detecting specularities based on a characterisation of Lambertian surfaces. Real surfaces are not simple composites of Lambertian and specular surfaces but evidence suggests that away from speculariti es they do not deviate fromthe Lambertian model by more than a factor of 3 or so. Thisproves adequate to serve as a constraint for specularity detection. Two independent tests identify image regions where the constraint is violated. The detector is shown to performs well on a varie ty of real images. Applications: improving binocular stereo and inferr ing surface geometry are described using specularities produced by the detector.

Specular Reflection Effects Elimination in Terrestrial Laser Scanning Intensity Data Using Phong Model

The intensity value recorded by terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) systems is significantly influenced by the incidence angle. The incidence angle effect is an object property, which is mainly related to target scattering properties, surface structures, and even some instrumental effects. Most existing models focus on diffuse reflections of rough surfaces and ignore specular reflections, despite ...

Extracting Shape and Reflectance of Lambertian, Specular, and Hybrid Surfaces

All existing shape extraction techniques that are based on photometric measurements rely on assumed surface reflection properties. We propose a method for determining the shape of surfaces whose reflectance properties may vary from Lambertian to specular without prior knowledge of the relative strengths of the Lambertian and specular components of reflection. The object surface is illuminated u...

Variational Multiframe Stereo in the Presence of Specular Reflections

We consider the problem of estimating the surface of an object from a calibrated set of views under the assumption that the reflectance of the object is non-Lambertian. In particular, we consider the case when the object presents sharp specular reflections. We pose the problem within a variational framework and use fast numerical techniques to approach the local minimum of a regularized cost fu...

A PDE Approach to Specularity Removal in Images Comp 766: Shape Analysis in Computer Vision

Specular reflections are exhibited by a wide range of materials whose reflectance can be described as a linear combination of specular and diffuse components [5]. There are several benefits to separating an image into the two components. By isolating the diffuse component (which is often well-described by the Lambertian model), powerful Lambertian-based tools for tracking, reconstruction and re...

Diffuse-Specular Separation and Depth Recovery from Image Sequences

Specular reflections present difficulties for many areas of computer vision such as stereo and segmentation. To separate specular and diffuse reflection components, previous approaches generally require accurate segmentation, regionally uniform reflectance or structured lighting. To overcome these limiting assumptions, we propose a method based on color analysis and multibaseline stereo that si...
